12 Easy Tips and Tricks for Good Posture

Good posture improves backpain

For good posture, we are going to discuss easy tips and tricks.

This will not only get you rid of neck aches and backaches but will also improve the quality of your life.

Nowadays, every other person is complaining of severe backache.

The first thing which must be taken into consideration is:

What is a posture and what are you doing for good posture?

What is a good posture?

It is the positioning of a person’s body that can be straight, twisted or stooped.

Good posture indicates the three natural curves that are present in a healthy spine.

These curves are thoracic, lumbar, and cervical.

They help in absorbing shock during walking, running, or jumping.

It is also called “Neutral Spine”.

When the spine is neutral, the back and neck are under the least amount of stress and strain. Because of this, backache and neck pain poof away.

When seen from front or back, all the 33 vertebrae should appear vertical along the body.

What to do for a good posture?

1. Do not slouch

Not only it puts strain on the bones, muscles, and joints. But it also crashes the internal organs like the stomach and lungs.

With time it results in difficulty in breathing and severe indigestion.

2. Prone to Text-neck?

Are you addicted to mobile phones while surfing, texting, and playing games?

Inevitably, you would be prone to having a text-neck.

A text-neck contributes to posture formed by leaning forward for a longer time.

It results in constant neck, head, shoulder, and cervical pains.

Only recently, this term has been coined but it was there all along.

People have always hunched over for a long period of time, during various activities.

Including reading, drawing, sketching, stitching, crocheting, and similar activities.

3. Tips for good posture at a desk

If you have a 9 am to 5 pm office job, (and in the present pandemic scenario work-from-home) where you have to sit at a desk the whole day long. Then you have to take extra care for good posture and to maintain it.

First of all, sit up straight in the chair. Do not slouch!

Place a lumbar support cushion at your back and sit on a coccyx seat cushion to protect your tailbone.

Never sit in one place for more than 30 minutes

The general rule of thumb is to walk for a total of 3 minutes for every half an hour of the sitting phase.

While sitting in a revolving chair, twist with your whole body instead of by just your waist.

Even if you are in your early 20’s, you must start taking care of your back and it will take you a long way.

Bend your knees at a right angle and your feet planted on the floor.

Do not strain your neck, rather move your mobile at eye level.

4. Practise Yoga to correct bad posture

Yoga has proved to be effective to correct bad posture.

Camel pose, Cobra pose, Downward dog pose, Bridges, and planks are some of the yoga poses for a good posture.

5. Stand Tall

How do you like a slouched person wearing the newest fashion clothing?

Not good right?

For good posture, straighten up voluntarily. Suck in your tummy, shoulders square, chin forward, and SMILE.

This will not only improve your posture but will also make you looker smarter.

6. Drive away with a good posture

If your job or daily routine needs you to be on the road for long, then naturally you would like to lean a bit on the car seat.

Always place the tailbone and back support cushions. They will provide you comfort. Sit tall, bending the knees only a bit.

Bring a car seat closer to the steering wheel, so that there is not any chance of reclining over.

7. Save those heels for some special occasion

Undoubtedly, high-heels are a fashion statement for centuries.

But wearing high heel on regular basis, put a strain on the back and change the shape of the spine on the long run.

It also results in putting the whole weight on the knees that weakens them with time.

8. Nestling the phone

In this world full of hustle and bustle many people like to multi-task. They nestle the phone in between ear and shoulder. This practice puts a lot of strain on the neck, shoulders, and upper back muscles.

Use your hand, hand’s free, or earphones instead.

Neck rolls are good to get rid of this pain.

9. Forward head posture or poking chin

When the screen is elevated from eye level, we tend to poke our chin out or make our head forward.

It results in the shortening of neck muscles and compressed cervical vertebrae.

This leads to:

Headaches, midback and neck discomfort, chest pain, neck, and upper back muscle tension.

Proper physiotherapy proves helpful.
For good posture, always turn up to one side, fold your knees, put strain on your palms, and get up from the bed.

Never get up pushing force on your back!!

It will weaken the spine.

10. For good posture hit the feather, the right way

You would have noticed, your head, neck, back, and legs tightened up even after a good night’s sleep.
Ever wondered what is the reason behind it?
It is due to the wrong choice of mattress and pillow placement that results in a bad sleeping posture.
Replace the soft mattress with a firm one that is designed to hold the natural spine shape in position.
Place a board under your mattress for added stiffness.
If you are a back sleeper, then use only a thin pillow.
If you are a side sleeper, then bend your knees slightly and tuck a pillow right under your neck. So, that it aligns with your spine.

11. Picking objects from the floor

Always fold your knees first, and then pick up any object from the ground. In a way that you are hugging it close to your body.

Suck in your tummy and take small, calculated steps.

There is no need to rush!
12. Best posture while pooping
Sit on the commode in such a way that your feet rest on some stool. They must be higher than your hips.
Keep your spine straight.
With elbows on your knees, lean forward.
If you have a habit of spending a lot of time on the commode reading, talking on the phone, or internet surfing.
Then stop doing so at once!!
As in the long run, constant pressure on the rectum will lead to hemorrhoids.

Take away

A good posture is something we all need to improve the quality of our life. It will help strengthen our spine in the long run and keep us pain-free.
