13 Top reasons why eyelashes fall out

by Health Fitness Galore July 29, 2021
Eye lashes fall because of iron, biotin, and protein deficiency
We have grown up watching Minney Mouse batting her eyelashes to Mickey Mouse to attract him. Hollywood actress Mila Kunis has one of the most pretty natural eyelashes.

Eyelashes not only beautify the eyes but also protect them.

Shedding 1 to 5 eyelashes daily is quite normal but if the number exceeds then one gets real concerned. Hair and eyelashes shed off and regrow every six to ten weeks.

If your eyelashes are falling out, then there are a few factors you need to know.

4 Benefits of eyelashes

  1. Eyelashes work like an eye guard.
  2. They protect the eyes from extreme sunlight.
  3. They protect the eyes from debris and sand particles.
  4. They inform the eyelids when to close them.

13 Top reasons why your eyelashes are thinning and falling out

Bad hygiene is not one of the reasons due to which eyelashes thin.
If your eyelashes fall out it is because of any of these factors.

1. Stress

During exams or, job interview preparation one tends to lose hair.

Stress is a key factor in eyelashes to thin. Stress prompts more hair to enter the last phase (telogen) of the hair life cycle.

2. Alopecia ariata

A condition in which the autoimmune disease initiates, due to which the body start attacking its own hair follicles.

A person who experiences acute alopecia eventually regrow his eyelashes. Those people who have chronic alopecia may have permanent eyelash loss.

3. Blepharitis

Blepharitis is the inflammation of the eyelids. It results because of the clogging of the oil glands on the base of eyelashes resulting in redness and irritation and also as the number of bacteria at the base of our eyelids increases and the eyelashes become weakened and fall.

It is also characterized by dry eyes which cause eyelashes to thin.

4. Cancer

Eyelid cancer or chemotherapy sessions can lead to losing eyelashes. The eyelashes will eventually grow back in a year.

5. Chronic conjunctivitis

Prolonged conjunctivitis (inflammation of the thin membrane covering the outer surface of the eye) also leads to thinning of eyelashes due to morning eyelash crusting.

6. Demodex

Demodex folliculorum is a parasite living in the human hair follicles. Do you get a chill run down the spine? A small amount of their presence is quite normal but if they infest the hair follicles it may also lead to eyelash loss.

7. Madarosis

It is possible to lose eyelashes from one eye only because of a health condition called Madarosis.

Madarosis is of two types:
  1. Scarring
  2. Non-scarring
It may result in complete or partial eyelash loss.

8. Thyroid disorders

Both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism can cause eyelash thinning and fallout. After the proper treatment, eyelashes will regrow.

9. Trichotillomania

It is the mental condition in which a person becomes habitual of tugging off his eyelashes under stress.

10. Eye makeup

Eye makeup including concealer, mascara, eyeliner, eye pencil, and eye shadow can result in falling off eyelashes because of either bad quality, sharing eye makeup, or prolonged use.

Never share or exchange eye makeup with anyone no matter how close to you.

Always remove your eye makeup before going to bed.

Try to change your eye makeup after every three months to ensure stopping any bacterial growth.

If you feel that any eye makeup product is resulting in allergies, then stop using it just then and there.

11. Products used to enhance eyelashes

Eyelash extensions and curlers both have found to stimulate eyelashes to fall out.

The glue used for eyelash extension leads to allergic reactions in some people.

12. Nutritional deficiency

Eyelashes are found to fall out due to iron, selenium, zinc, and vitamin D deficiency.

13. Styes

A sty is a bacterial infection on the base of eyelashes. It is in the form of (sometimes) pus-filled pimple or a boil and is very painful. It makes the eyelashes to fall.

Do eyelashes grow back after falling out?

If you take care of your inner self and take action in time it is very much likely that you get your fallen eyelashes to grow back again embellishing your eyes.

6 Amazing Tips to get rid of brittle and breaking eyelashes

1. Apply oil or petroleum jelly daily

One of the best remedy of all times for falling eyelashes is applying castor oil daily to eyelashes with the help of a cotton bud. Let it stay overnight. It will help the healthy eyelashes to regrow.

You can also use Vitamin E, almond oil, or coconut oil.

2. Apply Green tea daily

Brew a fresh cup of green tea. Leave a few drops of green tea behind. Soak them in a cotton ball and apply them to your eyes. Leave it on overnight.

Green tea is packed with antioxidants so it helps in the regrowth of eyelashes.

3. Take a hair growth supplement

The way a hair growth supplement works for your scalp to regrow healthy-looking locks, the same goes for eyelashes.

4. Adopt a nutritious diet lifestyle

Add food containing biotin, proteins, vitamin A, B3 and C, and fats in your diet. Their deficiency is one of the factors that cause eyelash fall.

Biotin is present in grains, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, and nuts.

Proteins are present in eggs, milk, chicken, red meat, grains, and pulses.

Vitamin A and C is present in dark yellow and orange vegetables and fruits.

Vitamin B3(Niacin) is present in avocados, beef, chicken, fish, and turkey

5. Use Over the counter eyelash conditioning products

There a number of good eyelash conditions gels and serums in the market which help in gaining eyelash growth back.

6. Take Multivitamins

Include multivitamins which contain biotin, zinc and iron in your daily diet to boost up eyelash growth.

Take-away Points

Eyelashes not only adorn our eyes; they also protect them against outward objects from entering the eyes and harming them.

Falling out of one to five eyelashes in a day is normal but if the if the number spikes, then you shall rush to the doctor right away and do not only rely on self-diagnosis or home remedies.
