How to remove dark circles under the eyes permanently

If you are an avid WWE Championship fan, you would have seen your favorite wrestler getting knocked down and sometimes receiving a big, black, or purple patch around their eye commonly known as dark or black eye and your heart sinks just looking at them. The same kind of feeling one gets when he gets a dark circle naturally.

We will be discussing the ways to get rid of dark circles and will check out if we can do naturally anything or if dark circles surgery is the only option.

What are dark circles?

Dark Circles Surgery-The Last Resort? 9 Possible Reasons

Dark circles, or dark circles under the eyes, medically called periorbital hyperpigmentation, can be hereditary, ancestral, or in people with darker skin tones. It can also be because of bad sleeping habits as well as physical exertion.

Those people who have to sit in front of the computer for a longer period also tend to get dark circles.

Dark circles surgery is a go-to nowadays when other things do not work. Dark circles under your eyes make your face look like it is eclipsed and make people panic cause of cosmetic reasons, otherwise medically it is nothing of serious concern.

Reasons for Dark Circles Under Eyes

There are multiple reasons for dark circles under the eyes.

Depending upon the skin tone, the color of dark circles ranges from black to dark brown to purple to blue.

1. Allergies

The nasal cavity tissues and sinuses get swollen due to allergies, which gives a black-eye effect under the eyes.

These dark circles are called Allergic Shiners, Periorbital Venous Congestion, or, Allergic Facies. Allergic Shiners can go away if treated properly, but they can bounce back when the allergen triggers again.

2. Anemia and iron deficiency

Anemia and iron deficiency also contribute to dark circles as it does not let the oxygen in the blood vessels under the eyes.

3. Thyroid issues

Hyperthyroidism and Hypothyroidism both contribute to dark circles. Due to thyroids, the water is retained, especially under the eyes, pulling the skin down, and making dark-colored eye bags.

4. Longer Screen times

If you look around closely, you will find a gradual increase in dark circles in people of all ages because of increased screen time. People who tend to get exposed to mobile, television, or computer screen for longer times may get dark circles. It strains the blood vessels around the eyes, enlarging and consequently darkening them.

5. Frequent eye rubs

Rubbing or scratching your eyes frequently can result in wear and tear of the thin blood vessels under the eye, which becomes visible as dark circles.

6. Makeup and other face products

Many times, it is the eyeliner, mascara, face wash, or moisturizer that is the reason for your eye circles. It happens because of an allergic reaction to any of these products, so it is better to get a patch test done on a small area prior to the application of any new product in your beauty regimen. Also, be gentle while applying or removing the makeup as it may also result in breaking the tender blood vessels around and under the eyes.

7. Bad sleeping habits

A. Sleep deprivation

Sleep deprivation or not sleeping for 6-8 hours per day causes the blood vessels to dilate. It increases the blood flow and as the skin under the eyes is very thin so it becomes darker.

B. Over Sleeping

It is a common notion that only sleep deprivation leads to dark circles, but that is not the case. Oversleeping can lead to a similar effect. As we sleep for longer hours, it leads to fluid retention, resulting in dark circles.

8. Excessive salt consumption

Do you draw your hand towards the salt shaker during your meals? Then think twice before topping your food with salt as it leads to water retention and shows as a dark circle under the eyes.

9. Excessive sun exposure

If you go out in the sun for long without applying sunscreen, it leads to dark circles because of the overproduction of melanin- the pigment which gives the skin its dark color. Always apply broad-spectrum sunscreen before going out.

Removing dark circles- The natural way

1. Cucumber for dark circles

Placing cucumber slices on the eyes not only relaxes them but also eases swelling and puffiness around the eyes and helps in removing the dark circles.

2. Cold compress for dark circles

Using a cold compress shrinks the blood vessels, diminishing dark circles.

3. Adding vitamin E and vitamin K to your regular diet

Almonds, corn, spinach, and sunflower oil have Vitamin E.

Vegetables like broccoli, brucell’s sprouts, cabbage, and cauliflower, and green leafy vegetables like spinach, parsley, kale, and lettuce contain vitamin K.

Vitamin E is rich in collagen, whereas vitamin K is known to heal damaged skin.

Together, vitamins E and K help in removing dark circles.

4. Teabags

Aaahh!!

The sheer joy which placing tea bags on my eyes brings me. I cannot express it in words. After having my cup of green tea, I always put the tea bags in the fridge and place the cool tea bags in my eyes. The antioxidant properties of caffeine stimulate blood circulation, reducing dark circles and soothing the eyes.

5. Facials

A good facial with a special focus on the area around the eye can help to stimulate good blood circulation, which will help to get rid of dark circles.

Removing dark circles through Medical intervention

1. Blepharoplasty

Can a dermatologist remove dark circles?

If you want to remove dark circles permanently, you can opt for blepharoplasty for dark circles, in which the fat deposits under the lower eyelids are removed. This makes the dark circles disappear.

Consult a dermatologist to know in detail any potential side effects associated with it, as the skin around the eyes is very delicate. Side effects include irritation, difficulty in closing the eyelids, dry eyes, and bleeding.

Under eyes dark circle surgery cost

The basic cost includes around 3000 US Dollars. This cost is not inclusive of room charges and anesthesia.

2. Fillers

Injections of platelet-rich plasma or hyaluronic acid gel can be used in the area under the eye to get rid of dark circles.

3. Chemical peels

With the help of a certified dermatologist, you can also choose chemical peels to remove dark circles. An alpha-hydroxy acid like glycolic peel is a very good option to tame hyperpigmentation.

4. Azelaic Acid

It can be used alone or in combination with antioxidants, niacinamide, or hydroxyl acids which promote skin-lightening effects.

While using azelaic acid, one should always go out in the sun wearing a broad-spectrum sunscreen otherwise, it will undo all the beneficial effects gained from azelaic acid.

5. Lasers

Laser surgery for dark circles is really safe and effective. There are two types of laser procedures to get rid of dark circles: ablative and nonablative.

Takeaway points

Dark circles can be hereditary, due to some deficiency, or as a result of lifestyle choices. They can be removed naturally or clinically. Dark Circles Surgery is also quite useful but shall be done through an expert dermatologist after discussing all the potential risks.
