Turmeric is a flowering plant. Its botanical name is Curcuma longa. The substance that gives turmeric its characteristic properties is called “Curcumin”. You use its roots for cooking. The plant’s rhizomes (underground stems) are collected and you utilize them in either fresh or dried form.
In-ground form, it gives a deep yellow-orange powder. Turmeric powder has a mustard-like aroma and black pepper-like flavor. It is a staple spice in Asian and Middle Eastern kitchens for its distinct flavor and as a dye.
Turmeric has been a staple in Asia for centuries. It is an integral part of Ayurveda, Unani, and Chinese medicine.
In India, they used it for dyeing the robes of priests and monks. From there it got introduced to South East Asia and later to the rest of the World. In Europe, Turmeric is called “Indian Saffron” or Golden Spice. Named so because of its multiple benefits and distinctive golden yellow color.
Talking from personal experience, crows equally adore turmeric. Once I placed turmeric to be dried on my patio. Whenever I used to go, to check on it, a little would be missing. One fine day, I found the culprit. A crow was taking some away in its beak. As soon as it saw me, it flew away, and off went my precious turmeric, too.
9 BENEFITS OF TURMERIC
1. Turmeric relieves pain
I have a faded memory of my childhood when my dad had back-to-back foot injuries. This is where my Mom came in with a magic potion. She used to make olive oil and turmeric paste and would coat the ankle and foot lightly with it, followed by a bandage wrap. The next day, she would repeat the process with a fresh paste and bandage. In this way, the pain would go away without using painkillers and the foot healed completely. It was something she learned from Oriental medicine.
